Dinner was served much more casually than the other night. Lily’s father served it from a large pot he placed on a sideboard, ladling it into earthenware bowls. The prayer was shorter, too. A quick giving of thanks, a request to bless the food, and then we got down to the business of eating.

“So, what movies did you get?”

“Invaders from Mars, Phantasm, and Night of the Living Dead.” Lily answered.

“Wow. Old ones. Have you seen them before?”

“Nope! They just looked interesting.”

My eyes went back and forth between them, my spoon went back and forth with the bowl.

“They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Now I see why you bought the VCR.” He mopped his bowl with a piece of bread, soaking up sauce that clung to the sides. This seemed like a more efficient way than the way I’d been doing it. I put the bowl back on the table and copied his actions.

“You can have seconds, Kat. You don’t have to eat the bowl!” She laughed. I pointed with the soggy bread at her father, who was busy shoving his own piece in his mouth.

“Daddy has a heart condition. He’s only supposed to have one bowl. We could eat ten, if we like.”

“I don’t think I made that much.” He said, having swallowed the bread. “Besides, I’m having a piece of cake. Just see if I don’t!”

He had seemed so scary when I first met him. A god of a man. It was hard to accept the fact that despite his intimidating presence, he wasn’t anything other than human.

“That reminds me…”

“You want to know if you can take yours downstairs to eat.”

“Umm. Yeah. Can we?”

“Of course. You aren’t a little kid anymore, you know.”

“I know. I just thought maybe you would feel lonely, eating dessert by yourself.”

“I’ll take a couple pieces over to Loto’s. He’s probably watching the game, anyway.” He smiled.

“Okay. Are you going to have more stew, Kat?”

I shook my head. The bowls were very large, and I had already eaten more than I was used to. Besides, having smelled the cake batter earlier, I wanted to save a little room for a piece. I had a bit of a weakness for chocolate, even though I didn’t get to indulge in it very often.

“Hmm. Me neither, I guess. We can always sneak back upstairs later for leftovers if we get hungry again. Though we’ve also got popcorn, too… Yep. Probably better not to have seconds right now.” She stood quickly, whisking the bowls from the table before disappearing into the kitchen.

“Well, that’s a first. Usually she’ll eat three or four bowls. Huh. It was good, wasn’t it?” He asked. I nodded enthusiastically.

Lily whirled back into the dining room, carrying a slice of cake in each hand.

“Come on, Kat!” She said excitedly. She bent to kiss her father on the top of his head. I followed after her as she twirled her way back out of the dining room. Somehow the cake didn’t go flying. I could hear her father’s booming laugh all the way to the staircase.
